What Skills are Required to Play Amazon Adventure Bundle?
These pieces are mid-elementary level and River Dolphins will also be enjoyed by students that are late elementary. None of the pieces require the student to be able to read and can easily be taught by rote. However, we always recommend showing the student a score so that they have a sense of the direction of the pitch, when motives change, etc. Teaching these pieces in this way helps students learn to read the visual cues of the music score and can help them pay more attention to these things as they are learning to read. These pieces are also excellent pieces for reading students as well.
In Monkeying Around and Jaguar Jungle, the smallest note value is the quarter note. River Dolphins contains eighth notes (though students do not need to know anything about eighth notes prior to the piece) and does include pedal (which can be held down through the entire piece).
There are sharps, flats and naturals notated (no key signatures), but these can be easily taught by rote.
Bonus Mp3s Included
Your purchase of the Amazon Adventure Bundle includes bonus mp3 performance tracks for each piece. You can send this mp3 to students to introduce or help them learn the piece.
The Power of Rote and ReadingĀ® Teaching
When you combine rote teaching with teaching to read music, students are much more excited about their progress and usually stay motivated longer. This is because kids know that they can play music that is much more difficult than they can read.
Think of the way kids learn to read. They first learn to “do” the language (i.e. speak it) before they ever learn to read it. In the same way, students best learn when we show them how to “do” the pianoĀ before they learn to read the notes. For more thoughts on the value of rote teaching and how long it really takes a child to learn to read music, read:Ā How Long Does It Take to Learn to Read Music?
